In reply to my email, Smilegate have said that once they have sorted the situation of Turfbattles out with Aeriagames, we’ll continue our email conversations, and start talking about things more specifically. But until that’s all finished and sorted, we can’t really go into further discussions.
I expected this would be the case anyway – they were interested in getting my initial proposal to see if it was serious. Now that they see I am serious, hopefully they will continue email conversations with me once they’ve finished up with the current TB.
And as you all know, I wasn’t going to get into costs etc until TB had closed anyway, so we could get a proper idea of the user base (as per who signs up to this board)
That’s all for now – I probably won’t do another update until around the 18th of June when Smilegate restart our email conversations.

I recieved a reply to my previous email from Smilegate. The situation has changed again!
So, despite the fact that they wish to continue the Korean Sephiroth game, they’ve given me the option of either aquiring an EU license, or aquiring the game source code – and continuing the Turfbattles game as a separate project.
While the difference between just having a license, and having the source code is quite big – the cost will presumably also be quite different.
If we are to make this game exactly how we want, then we really need to work together as a community and see if we are able to obtain the source code.

The more people that post in there about their situation, the better idea we will have of whether this is possible.

So as you can imagine, a lot of rumours were spreading around straight after Aeriagames announced they were to shut down the game.
Unfortunately, due to me believing certain information, i reported false information about sephiroth closing. Sorry about that. Sephiroth is not closing.
This changes things quite a lot, as I doubt we (The Turfbattles community) would be able to buy the game from Smilegate in this situation. Instead, our only options would be to find another publisher, or buy a license ourselves.
Finding another publisher is going to be extremely difficult as 2 publishers have already given up on the game – so it’s highly unlikely a 3rd is going to take the risk.
The option of buying a license ourselves is also going to be difficult. Unless there is a willing community, there’s no way we’re going to be able to raise the money needed to buy a license.
If you really want to be able to play Turfbattles again, get everyone you know to come to the forum i’ve set up on www.turfbattles.co.uk/forum and contribute in discussions. The more people we get, the better idea we have of whether this will be possible or not.

Hello everyone,
For all players, old a new, this is sad news.
While we have given Turf Battles a lot of time, we have had over a year of continued issues (old and new). We have been working with the developer through these difficulties, but the efforts of both our teams have not been able to completely eradicate the problems facing Turf Battles. Fewer and fewer people have been logging in.
We will no longer be able to support the game.
On Friday June 18th, 2010, the Aeria Games Turf Battles servers will be taken down.
Mushy Stuff
Last month I posted hopeful thoughts and aspirations regarding Turf Battles. About how much the game has meant to me, and how much I want to see it become as great as it can be. This month, I bear grave tidings and must disappoint the optimism of my previous post. It isn’t easy news to share, and it isn’t pleasant to make this post.
We had great hope for Turf Battles at our company, and still believe that the gameplay and PvP opportunities in TB show phenomenal promise. Over a year and a half, we have been striving to optimize everything that kept the game close to so many players’ hearts. You are all aware of the struggles we’ve had, and most of you have been with us since the beginning. Despite the sorrow that accompanies this news, we have all gained new memories and experiences.
We appreciate all of the support and love you’ve shown the game. You brought TB the chance to excel, and great progress has been made. We are returning the license to the developers, in the hopes that they will continue their progress with Turf Battles and help it become the best it can be.

It’s a shame this has happened. I feel sorry for all those who put their effort into Turfbattles, and now will have nothing to show for their hard work.

Rather than signing up to lots of different forums, it’d be better for everyone to sign up to 1 single forum and talk there – whether that’s at turfbattles.co.uk/forum I don’t know. For now, it’s best to stay here at the Aeriagames forums to keep the community together.
Hopefully Donnie will keep administrating our community like he has done before.
And as a final note – I don’t think this will be the end of Turfbattles.
